Community Engagement Program
CEP Sub Committee Charter and Development:
SSCBC has long been involved with the local community.
Through its history it has related closely with the sporting and social life of Sorrento and the southern Mornington Peninsula and has specifically provided support to the other sporting clubs and engaged with the local schools.
The current formal structure of a Community Engagement Sub-Committee (CEP) of SSCBC was established by the Club committee early in 2007. The first meeting was held with Bruce Watson as chairman on March 28, 2007.
The role of CEP is to undertake a range of activities to promote the Club and sailing in the Sorrento and wider Peninsula community.
The Charter provided by the Club committee was revised by the CEP sub committee and the current charter was submitted to the Club committee in November 2007.
- To encourage SSCBC involvement with various community institutions within the Mornington Peninsula to foster boating activities.
- To promote SSCBC as a family club focused on the sport of sailing to the community.
- To assist the Sailing Operations Manager to recruit additional trained volunteers to assist with patrol boat crew for racing and training events.
Historically, the Club has had arrangements with both our local primary schools to give students a boating day at the Club each year. In recent years the Club’s volunteer skippers have undertaken training programs with selected students from Padua College and Rosebud Secondary College. The current CEP program has intensified the commitment to these engagements and has developed and promoted the primary school scholarship scheme, to enable a student from each local school to undertake the Club’s youth sailing school each summer. This has recently been further enhanced by generous donations that have enabled the Club to acquire two fully equipped Minnows as training boats for these scholarship trainees.
The CEP sub committee is aware of the Department of Justice, Working with Children legislation requirements and has arranged police checks and established a register of Club volunteers with Working with Children cards to meet our commitments to the schools.
The CEP sub committee has also proposed a Community Open Day and this year the Club will be open to the public as part of the Yachting Victoria, Go Sailing promotions and CEP volunteers will take guided tours over the Club, boats and facilities. Following the local promotional activities leading to the staging of the 9er Worlds, there will be a public promotion in the Main Street of Sorrento on Saturday 6 December. Promotions at schools may be arranged. Many CEP volunteers are involved in hosting public occasions at the Club such as Season Opening Day and Australia Day.
