Announcement of Cowes Regatta Team

SSCBC is honoured to once again be the only Australian Sailing Club invited to participate in the 2K Global Team Race Regatta to be held at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, UK next month. After our successful campaign at the inaugural event at the New York Yacht Club last year, SSCBC is pleased to be representing Australia again. This regatta will take place from 25-29 September 2019.

The SSCBC Sailing Committee has invested significant time, energy and resources into this program, providing opportunities for all of our sailors to compete at a high level. Our Team Race / Match Race squad has over 40 Members, spread across a wide range of age and experience. This program increases the momentum of our Club’s sailing pathways, ensuring more young adult Members stay active in the sport and remain involved in life at SSCBC.

A strong team has been selected, including a mix of experienced 2K racers with others new to this format. Their sailing skills, international experience and ability to work as a team will combine to create two formidable boats. The process of selection was thorough, and we would like to congratulate the selected sailors who will travel to Cowes at the end of September. This provides a great opportunity for the sailors to gain more knowledge and skills in this growing format of sailing.

The SSCBC Selection Committee comprised Andrew Skinner, Drew Marget, Scott Llewelyn and David White. We are pleased to announce the following 8 sailors will represent the Club at RYS next month:

Jack Abbott
George Aulich
Grace Cockman
Michael Fels
Ben Gray
Charlotte Llewelyn
Tom Trotman
David White

The format of racing will be 2 vs 2 (last boat loses). This is a different form of racing where there is a lot more emphasis on tactics, close quarter boat handling and looking behind, rather than in front. The boats that the teams will be racing are matched J70s, a small step up from a Jubilee, but a lot more nimble. Unlike last year’s event, spinnakers will not be used at this regatta and that suits us just fine.

The Club has been instrumental in organising the first Australian 2K National Championships in conjunction with Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club from 7-8 September, which will be a great lead in regatta for the team.

I’m sure all Members would like to join us in congratulating the team and we wish them all the best as they represent SSCBC and our country.

Graham Cunningham, Commodore and Scott Llewelyn, Club Captain.
