Opti State Championships 2023

SSCBC Takes Out Male & Female State Championship in Open Fleet
and Male Green Fleet

The 2023 Cygnett Victorian Optimist State Titles were held at Mornington Yacht Club (MYC) over the weekend. The fleet was made up of 78 Optimists (20 Green, 21 Intermediate and 37 Open). The event attracted top sailors from Tasmania, South Australia, New South Wales and Western Australia.

SSCBC had an impressive 21 sailors competing across the three fleets. There was a mix of conditions across the three days with a stronger breeze filling in late on Saturday and a light to medium breeze on both Sunday on Monday. The MYC team did a great job to get in eight races for Open and Intermediate and 11 in for Green.

Our mighty Green Fleet had Harry Baxter place 6th, Tom Bonnett 4th, Tyler Deeth 2nd and Fred Cantwell (who got the loudest roar at the presentations) winning Green Fleet and also getting best under 10 year old male.

In Intermediate Fleet, Savannah Deeth was 4th female, Lily Cantwell was 3rd female and Juliet Sankey was 2nd female and best under 11 female at the event.

In Open fleet, in the overall standings, Jorja Mahony was 3rd, Augustus Buividas in 2nd and 1st place went to Murray Duthie from WA.

For the Victorian Championship in the female division, 3rd place went to Maya Cantwell, 2nd to Lottie Griffith and the female State Champion was Jorja Mahony. In the male division, 3rd place was Miles Levenspiel, 2nd Callum Simmons and 1st place and overall State Champion was Augustus Buividas.

A huge mention has to go to Cygnett who made a lot of sailors happy with the fantastic prizes generously provided. All participants also received a gift pack so thank you Cygnett for supporting this Championship.

Our Sailors were wonderfully supported by coaches Jack, Peter and David, and also their parents who helped out on and off the water. Part of the weekend was the VIODA AGM and it is a great opportunity to recognise parents of SSCBC sailors who were on the VIODA committee. A big thank you for your time Leah Tan, Michael Cantwell and Paul Simmons. Christian Cantwell has an exciting role ahead as the new VIODA President. Congtratulations.
