Private Sorrento Sailing Experience

Located on the stunning Mornington Peninsula, the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club, is one of Victoria’s most recognised sailing clubs and home to Australia’s largest Couta Boat fleet.

The Couta Boat’s history is a testament to the evolution of maritime technology and the fishing industry. Originally designed and built in Victoria from the 1870s for commercial fishing in the challenging waters of Bass Straight, the Couta Boat was known for catching barracouta, a fish that gave the boat its name.

Peak popularity was in the 1920s, but the rise of engine-powered vessels and preference for shark fishing led to its decline. However, in the 1970s, a community of enthusiasts led a revival, restoring old boats for recreational use. Today, Couta Boats are mostly used for racing and showcasing traditional sailing skills.

To share our heritage Couta Boats and our beautiful environment, the Club offers private group bookings for Thursday twilight sailing, on our three boats, Ripple, Rhapsody and Wattle.

For a true Club experience, follow up the two-hour sailing with a drink on the stunning deck, and/or dinner in our restaurant or private room The Fort.

Optional: Extend the experience with a ½ day Friday session for team-building activity or off-site meeting in our private room The Fort, including breakfast, morning tea and/or lunch.

The details:
Arrival, registration and briefing 2-3pm
Thursday twilight sailing, 4-6pm
November, December, February, March.
Each boat can take approximately six guests, so we can accommodate up to 18 participants per booking.
