2023 carsales CBA Portsea Cup

The move to change the start time to 1000hrs for the carsales CBA Portsea Cup turned out to be the right decision, and just about the only window for racing over the whole weekend.

The early start was a challenge for everyone but it all came together to start on time off the Portsea pier in a 7-9 knot north-easterly.

Concerned about what the breeze would actually do, the course was set long and then shortened at the top when the boats hit the 90 minute mark at the top.

Great comms with the fleet on VHF meant no-one got confused.

In Div 2, Gisella C1789 took out 1st in Performance Handicap by a clear margin, Duchess C21 was 2nd, nine seconds ahead of Joan C99 who was only eight seconds in front of Kitty Miller C126 – so some epically close racing that came down to very precise judgement calls.

In Div 1, Jocelyn C2014 did one better manoeuvre to snatch the victory from Sorrento C2011 by just 7 seconds. Ken was very chuffed that it had been such a tight race. Later it seemed Lockie was even more delighted with the result, as he stayed one up on dad! Third place was Margarita C97, four seconds ahead of Wagtail C86 – incredibly tight racing with 3rd to 8th separated by less than a minute.

Crews gathered on Sunday at Quarantine Station, Point Nepean for the annual Portsea Cup picnic, where they enjoyed food, drinks, live music by Pete Miller & Michael and presentations by CBA President, James Mighell.
