|Episode 2 – Living The Dream.
What do a chef, a Couta Boat sailor and a comedian have in common? They’re all living the dream! This week our podcast host Mark Klemens shoots the breeze with SSCBC head chef Bernard McCarthy, couta boat sailor Nigel Abbott and comedian, podcast host and TV presenter Hamish Blake.
Bernard shares his backstory of how he accidentally became a chef, what brought him to the Peninsula, his career highlights, and what we can look forward to on the winter menu. SSCBC is blessed to have a chef of Bernard’s calibre at the helm. Back to the water, Nigel Abbott long time SSCBC member, former Club Captain, and couta boat sailor talks to Mark about his love of sailing (that began thanks to skipping Sunday school) and the world travels and adventures it has afforded him, including being part of the America’s Cup team. And last but definitely not least Hamish Blake shares his tales of travel, podcasting, his sailing ambitions and life on Lego Masters all in his trademark convivial style.
Episode 3: From Sorrento to New York.
This week Shooting the Breeze has an international feel as our host Mark Klemens covers conversations spanning the globe. Mark talks with our Training Manager David White about growing up in Ireland and finding his love of sailing there, then sailing the world before anchoring at SSCBC. The conversation then moves to new Club member Chris Thomas whose family have lived all over the world due to Chris’s advertising career and his daughter’s pro golfing career. After living in the UK, Singapore, the Middle East, Africa and America, Chris and his family are now based at St Andrew’s Beach where they have the best of both sailing and golf. Chris has his sights set on mastering sailing his Wasp with the help of younger Club members. The final interview is direct from New York with SSCBC family members Emily Yarwood and her husband Andrew Penman who celebrated their wedding on the Western Lawn in February this year before returning to what would become an epicentre of the Corona virus. Emily and Andrew give us a first hand account of life in New York in these unsettling times.
Episode 4: Frontline News
This week our host Mark Klemens catches up with researcher and writer Tricia O’Brien about her work with the Couta Boat Association creating a coffee table book documenting Couta boat history.
Following on from that, Tom Trotman joins the show talking about learning to sail at SSCBC when he was 8 years old through to now in his mid twenties working as a sailing coach and his time sailing WASP’s.
To finish the episode, Mark has an interesting conversation with new member Dr Matthew Jones, who sails Couta boat Waltzing Matilda, about his paediatric work and his current work in the Army Reserve overseeing 170 army and navy personnel deployed to assist in the corona virus response.
Episode 5: Next Generation
In Episode 5, our host Mark Klemens and his guests show us that the world as we knew it may be on hold but life is moving ahead at SSCBC with the formation of the Next Generation Committee and the appointment of new Club Captain Tim Collett.
Mark also catches up with Dr Kathy Yu, Chief Medical Officer for the Australian Sailing Team. First up Mark talks to Jack Abbott who is Chair of the newly formed Next Gen committee. Jack started sailing at SSCBC as a child and has literally grown up at the Club, it’s a great conversation about learning to sail and the intergenerational friendships and opportunities life at the Club provides. The Next Gen Committee is an exciting addition to SSCBC.
Following on with a great catch up with Tim Collett who is keenly taking on the Club Captain role, it’s great to hear some of Tim’s sailing background and to hear about the sailing calendar in Covid times. And to finish Dr Kathy Yu talks all things medical related to the Australian Sailing Team, an interesting conversation covering a range of topics from minor injury to serious concussion and the mental health toll Covid has taken on athletes preparing for the Olympics.
