Recap: Australia Day, Buxton Cup & Jellis Craig Three Piers Race 2024

Australia Day 2024 kicked off with our Buxton Cup Australia Day dress up – well done to Tori, Bella, Juliet and Atticus for dressing up their boats so beautifully. We were thrilled to have so many families enjoying the festivities around the Club and we offered a warm welcome to all our visitors from around the bay who joined in the fun, and even helped our juniors to lead us in singing Advance Australia Fair on the deck!

The models developed late in the week predicting that at some stage the breeze would approach our wind limits.

The course was modified to take out the long beats and an option to retrospectively shorten was added.

It was gusty and feisty sailing down to Portsea and back, then it kicked up a notch as Div 1 was off Blairgowrie and Div 2 was turning at Rye.

It would have been too much for Div 1 to continue on to Rye and back so they were discontinued there. Most of Div 2 were already around the mark at Rye, so we just got the last couple of boats there and then discontinued racing.

Although retrospective shortening course is not ideal and it can be confusing, sometimes it’s the only way to get a result when the breeze dies or the conditions are more than we want to be racing in until we get to the next place to shorten.

Thank you to Jellis Craig for their ongoing support of the Club. Jellis Craig generously provided beautiful prizes for the winners of the Three Piers Race and drinks on the bar for sailors. We were also lucky to have some large Zhik wheelie bags for the winners of the Summer Series. Congratulations to the following:

Mr Trampoline Buxton Cup

The Buxton Cup is the fun event that our junior and youth Sailors look forward to after a busy summer campaign. The event started off with a pre training camp which had Optimist and Lasers train on the Wednesday and Thursday, preparing them for racing on Friday and Saturday. It was great to see 6 ILCAs out on the water and in the last week, Lachie Vaughan did an amazing job looking after sailors who are transitioning and seemed to really enjoy their week of training. On Australia Day, a couple prepped themselves for the 9am judgement of the Opti dress up and then went straight into a the 1st race session of the day.

The high winds on Friday meant it was too windy for the Green fleet to sail, so they went on coach boats. It was a great opportunity for some Green fleeters to try sailing in Intermediate conditions (20 knots), so a big well done to Oscar and Charlie for stepping up. We got in two races in the morning and then sailors raced in to have a jump on a Mr Trampoline and take part in the Australia Day activities. Our Junior Club Captains, Savannah Deeth and Miles Levenspiel prepped the junior sailors with the Australian National anthem and then raising the Australian flag.

In the afternoon, the wind had picked up and it was now an opportunity for some of Intermediate fleet sailors to race against the Open fleet Sailors who have a wind limit of 25 knots. With Tace officer Chris Clapp we got in another 3 races on the Friday afternoon. It was a busy Saturday with the fantastic Olympic Waves morning taking place and for anyone else who still wanted to get on the water there was a Team racing session on the Quests with some Next Gen Sailors.

In the afternoon session, the wind was perfect for all fleets and we got Green fleet on the water and for some it was their very first regatta and for others, their first race. We got in another 3 races which meant we had 3 races for Green, 6 for Intermediate, 9 for Open and 9 for ILCA/Laser.

Post racing, it was fantastic to run the prizegiving on the deck, jointly with the Lacco Cup presentation. Those who took home prizes got to take some special artwork created by Jos Law, who has supported our sailors so much throughout the years. I would also like to thank Coaches Jack Lewis, Peter McCann and Henri Levenspiel for working and caring so much with this group.
