Congratulations to the connections of Kate “the red boat” (Div 1) and to Graham Hodges, owner of Alice (Div 2) for their 1st place honours at this year’s Portsea Cup
Congratulations and apologies too to Graham Burton in Kitty Miller, who was incorrectly awarded 1st place in Div 2 due to system gremlins. Kitty Miller in fact finished second.
The day started out with some frustration for the Club Captain and Race Committee with most weather models predicting flukey winds from an unusual North Easterly direction
Full credit to PRO Peter Osbourne and his team of volunteers who patiently waited through the afternoon off Police Point assessing the ever changing conditions.
Division 1 began with a General Recall with the incoming tide making the start line difficult.
Peter chose to give them another go under P flag and a successful race was underway with a couple of premature starters being called back.
Margarita made it to the 1st mark first and was never headed, despite an enthralling final beat to the finish with Betty throwing everything at Margarita
Well done Harry Mighell and the Margarita crew for their deserved engraving on The Merthon Trophy. The building breeze helped the lower handicapped boats fill most of the top half of the placings .See Top 10 below
In Division 2 there was also a General Recall and the race got under way with the re-start under U Flag conditions
Jessamine was never headed throughout the race and had a comfortable line honours win from Aliscia

It was fabulous to see 24 Division 1 boats and 21 Division 2 boats take part including 4 boats from Queenscliff racing.
At the Quarantine Picnic on the following day some 150 attendees enjoyed a leisurely afternoon listening to the brilliant Lisa Bade with the aid of a few frothies. The flotilla of boats anchored off Quarantine was quite a spectacle
So the Portsea Cup has been run and won for it’s 41st time and now it’s onto the rest of the summer!
