Here is an update….

Currently, Newport is like Sorrento in January – we are in the peak of their summer. The team is staying in an AirBnB outside Newport in Middletown. To help the team settle in, Helene “Uber driver” did a run to the shops for some supplies for the coming few days. We had a great team building exercise of cooking up a US BBQ and the big decision to make was to microwave the ribs or BBQ them. Logic prevailed!

Today was the practise day of the regatta which gave our team a chance to know the Sonar boat, as only Tom has sailed them before. We had the first training slot which initially had some fog but ended up being the best breeze for the day / closest to the forecasted breeze for the three days of the regatta. It was pretty hot and muggy, but great breeze that ranged from 10-12 knots.

The big focus for on-water was to learn our roles/positions for the Sonar (tacks, gybes, kite work and straight-line speed). The team started off slow and built up the tempo into close quarter manoeuvres. We then got ashore, had a positive debrief, ran through the SI’s and now we’re off to a welcome function at the New York Yacht Club.
