OTB Fred Allen Series

Off The Beach (OTB) sailing is back! For Waszps, Tornados, Optimists and a casual Quest.

Sunday 22 November had enough breeze for the Fred Allen Series to get in three Opti Races and two longer ones in the WASZP and Tornado classes.

Tate Cantwell had a really consistent day with three clear wins in the Opti Green fleet, while Henri Levenspiel had three wins in the Open Optis. Hollie Cantwell was the best performer in the Intermediate Subdivision with a third and two fifths.

The racing had more of a regatta feel with the Opti sailors learning the importance of keeping clear of another class start line, with Tornados and Waszps setting up in their pre-starts. The Coaches did a great job anticipating this and kept them well clear and the sailors got a good appreciation of why we need to let the boats in the start sequence have a clear run at the line.

The Lasers had a day off due to many sitting final exams, but we expect them back next week.

At the time, COVID restrictions limited the number of Officials we could have to conduct racing, however we were able to utilise parent helpers. Thank you to all involved. Brett Levenspiel worked the Start Vessel with Ben Fels to crack through the races, while Hugo Llewelyn led the Coaches with efficient and accurate course setting and resetting.

On shore, we progressed our plan to have parents operating more of the “race office” functions, including Georgie Beck’s impressive effort to score the racing single handed.
