As you will have heard in the media, Australia is currently experiencing unprecedented bush fires across many of our states. We would like to reassure competitors travelling to Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club for the RS:X World Windsurfing Championships next month that the bush fires are hundreds of kilometres away from where we are located on the southern tip of the Mornington Peninsula. The Club has been raising funds for those affected by the bush fires and will be contributing to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery fund. We look forward to hosting the RS:X World Windsurfing Championships next month and welcoming all competitors to Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club.

Regards,

Graham Cunningham

SSCBC is delighted to announce that we have won the opportunity to host the RSX 2020 Windsurfing World Championships from 23-29 February 2020. Takapuna Boating Club withdrew from hosting the event just four months prior to the event, so it was a short turnaround for us to apply. Against 13 other bids, SSCBC has been selected to host this exciting event and received 5 votes from the selection panel, compared with China 1 and Europe 2. Our reputation, experience in hosting regattas such as this and our Worldwide connections all contributed to SSCBC being awarded this regatta.

Of the 10 Olympic Class World Championships, we are fortunate that this is the simplest and most fun event to run. With only one race course, this is a relatively straight forward event, at a time in our calendar when the kids are back at school and mid week at the Club is quieter. The final medal race will be held on Saturday 29 February, and will be a display of truly world class racing for our Members and guests to see straight off the Club.

Many countries that have already qualified for the Olympics will use this as the final event to select the athletes that they will send to the Olympics. This is going to be a fiercely contested World Championships, with so much on the line at every level.

There will be a couple of training camps to be held at the Club in the lead up to the event, as the competitors prepare themselves for what is the final selection event for countries to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
