Victorian Optimist State Championships

The 2021 Cygnett Victorian Optimist State Champs were held at the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria. It is very fair to say that they made a big effort to make everyone feel welcome.

Similar to last week’s Laser State Titles, this was a light wind regatta. Team Sorrento was led by Jack Lewis who worked with Open fleet and Campbell Rickard with the Intermediates. Our mighty Green fleet sailors had an awesome three days of fun games and training, followed by some racing. Our youngest sailors stepped up to the plate and placed an impressive 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. (1st Ned Williamson, 2nd Sadie Cunningham and Tate Cantwell 3rd).

At the start of the season, each Team Sorrento sailor sets personal goals for the upcoming season. Holly Cantwell’s main goal was to win the Intermediate fleet at the State Titles. Holly Cantwell not only won the Championship, but won 5/8 races!

In the very competitive Open fleet, which had sailors from across the country, our Team Sorrento sailors didn’t quite get to the podium, however they were certainly in and amongst the front pack. On behalf of the Optimist sailors, we would also like to thank Cygnett who sponsored the event and support junior sailing.

Team Sorrento will be travelling to Mornington next week to have a second go at Snapper Point, which was postponed last time due to the snap lockdown. Thank you to Bret Levenspiel (aka the Lemonpeels, or simply the Lemons) for the photos.
